Installation of new groundwater flux monitoring wells

In collaboration with iFLUX and Geosonda, we successfully installed 3 new monitoring wells for novel iFLUX groundwater flux sensors. The flux sensors, developed by iFLUX, measure real-time, continuous horizontal groundwater flow rates and directions. The sensors are installed at a depth of 11 meters, measuring groundwater flow in a highly permeable gravel layer.

We will investigate in how far this new flux data can reduce uncertainties in our groundwater model. Given the very local nature of this measurement instrument, a first step of this assessment consists of placing these groundwater flux sensors close to each other in order to understand how representative these flux measurements are for a bigger area. This is especially important if these fluxes will be used to assist calibration of groundwater flow models.
